Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Review

With the recent release of 16.10, I decided to do an Ubuntu 16.10 MATE Review and take a look at the changes from a user perspective to see how well it performs. I'll also be investigating whether it's a worthy upgrade, keeping in mind of course that the end of life for this (and other Ubuntu 16.10 variants) is 9 months, so it's certainly not something you'd want to move to if you are looking for a long term support release. In those instances, stick with the 16.04 or 14.04 releases. This latest release, Ubuntu 16.10 MATE, has been completely rebuilt on GTK3+ and features the updated MATE 1.16 desktop environment. Ubuntu MATE does the desktop justice in my mind; it's well laid out, easy to use and feels very usable. They also, in my mind, have nailed the new user experience with the excellent and well constructed Welcome app which launches at first boot. I'm going to quickly delve into the Welcome app for a moment because even though it's not exclusive to the 16.10 release, if you are

How to Fix NVIDIA Screen Tearing in XFCE, MATE, KDE, LXDE and others

If you are running XFCE, LXDE, MATE or other desktop environments that are not running a compositor such as Compton and you have a reasonably new NVIDIA card, you are likely pulling your hair out trying to get rid of the awful screen tearing you are experiencing. This screen tearing typically occurs when you are running a proprietary NVIDIA driver under Linux and have one of the aforementioned (or any non-composited) desktop environments. Fortunately for all of us, there is a fix and I'm going to walk you through how to make that nasty NVIDIA screen tearing go away. I'm not going to get into the specifics as to why this happens because frankly, I have no idea and I'm more interested in how to make it go away (although if someone DOES know why, please let us know in the comments because I'm always eager to learn). For me, the tearing is very obvious when moving windows back and forth or scrolling in Firefox.. to the point that it drives me (and I'm sure you as well or you wouldn't be h

Ubuntu 16.10 Review

With the recent release of Ubuntu 16.10, we thought we'd delve into the latest release of this popular Linux distribution and share with your our Ubuntu 16.10 Review. This review is intended for the desktop user. If you hop distros as much as I do (see Trials and Tribulations of a Distro Hopper) then you're probably pretty excited to mess with this release. The installation process for Ubuntu hasn't changed a wink. As per usual, it's one of the fastest and easiest installs out there and for my hardware, worked without issue. Installation of third party drivers is quick and easy as per usual. Some people prefer to use the GUI to install drivers but I find the console still to be far more efficient for most tasks so I install all of my third party drivers with one line. sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall For those who want to use the GUI, however, just launch the app Software & Updates and click the Additional Drivers tab or, alternatively, use the shortcut and launch the Additional Driver

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Released - Completely Reworked for GTK 3+

The Ubuntu MATE team have announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 16.10. Normally, point releases such as this don't offer massive changes but in this particular case, there are some huge changes in this release. Ubuntu MATE 16.10 have completely migrated the platform to GTK 3+ half a year early thanks to the financial support of the community. According to the press release, Ubuntu MATE is the first major distribution to ship a full GTK3+ implementation of the MATE desktop, which is excellent news for the distro hopper community and those who love MATE. I've always been a big fan of the MATE desktop myself, I think the development team behind Ubuntu MATE have done an excellent job with small details such as the excellent "Welcome" screen that comes up once installed and guides you through software selection via Software Boutique. It feels like a very solid release. I'm actually running Ubuntu MATE 16.10 right now as I write this article: I've been running it since it's release yesterday

Deploying a Document Management System: An eFileCabinet Guidebook

So you've decided that your brand will benefit from having a document management system. That's almost certainly a wise decision. But adopting a DMS takes more than just installing it or signing up for it. A deployment process needs to take place – an efficient one. To help you out, here's a guidebook that covers the essentials of deploying any document management system effectively, and with minimal disruption. Necessary Questions to Answer Before Document Management System Deployment If an organization has already gone paperless prior to purchasing DMS, data migration services and structural frame-working of content are enough to deploy a document management system. However, for organizations that have not already gone paperless, the process becomes lengthier, and it all begins with digitizing all the documents through scanning. Sometimes decision makers within an organization will buy scanners designed to digitize a high volume of documents. However, the preexisting multi-functio

Enhancing Self-Service Portals with Online Learning Content

Web portals offer a broad spectrum of valuable services to different groups of people your organization interacts with including: Customers and prospects Employees and prospective employees Investors Partners Members Volunteers And more! Each of these groups have different reasons to learn about your products, services, and company history. It’s great to train these people so they are more knowledgeable about what you do and who you are. Strikingly Is Taking Blogging Seriously (And Why That's Vital)

Strikingly is a one-page website builder that I have long been an admirer of. In fact, I included it in my list of 25 CMS to watch in 2016. Over the last year or so, they have released Strikingly 4 and followed it up with updates to bring about features like the ability to switch templates without losing content, custom colors, more page blocks, and the ability to blog via their 'Simple Blog' page block. But now, they’ve enhanced that blogging functionality with an array of features – and I think it’s the kind of move that other content management systems need to mimic. Here's what they did: Blogging With Strikingly Strikingly’s new blogging features makes it easy for webmasters and bloggers to grow an audience. Firstly, their 'Simlpe Blog' feature allows you to write, edit, and publish blog posts in-line, from within Strikingly's interface. 4 Ways a Document Management System Simplifies Compliance

A truly good Document Management System will do more than just manage files and media assets. It will also play an active role in the regulatory system that's engrained into most office workflows. Here's how a strong DMS achieves that. 1. It Unifies Authorities’ and Organizations’ Compliance Objectives Since the beginning of the millennium, compliance and regulatory requirements have become a particularly difficult territory to navigate, especially in relation to the public use of the Internet, the mobile means of accessing the Internet, and the increasing specificity of compliance standards by industry. As illustrated throughout this post, many document management system features, when considered in tandem with the laws relevant to industries that can benefit the most from use of this technology, share a symbiotic relationship—one where DMS upholds, simplifies, and ensures compliance inasmuch as the law is written to accommodate the proliferation of the document management syst

eZ Conference 2016 Day Two: Content, Commerce, and Defining Digital

After the success of day one, day two of the eZ conference kicked off with an interactive presentation hosted by Roger Antonesen, a professor from the University of Oslo. The audience got to cast their votes for each question via a website accessible by short URL or QR code, with separate URLs being provided for Team IT and Team Marketing in order to compare the answers coming out from the two camps. The answers were presented as they came in via pie chart on the big screen. It was certainly different, and it was cool to see what the audience was thinking in real time – even if there were far more IT guys than there were marketers! The Trials and Tribulations of a Distro Hopper

I've been a Linux user for as long as I can remember. Pretty much since I was a kid (I'm now 41) and there was a Linux distribution I could find. I didn't start with just Linux though.. I was installing OS/2 by floppy disk (30 or so of them) which was basically akin to punching oneself in the face for hours on end, especially when the last or next to last disk failed repeatedy and you had to start over. Oh OS/2. How I hated your many disks and the install time of 2+ hours. I even messed around with BeOS for a while. I purchased every release and loved it.. such a shame it didn't survive. Remember this beauty? I first got started with Linux either with Red Hat or SuSE. I remember Mandrake Linux when it first came out and being hugely excited. I remember falling in love with Slackware and feeling like a purist for using it. eZ Conference 2016 Day One: CMS Is Alive & Digital Transformation Is Tricky

It was a mild yet sunny October day in Paris, and just a short distance from the world famous L’arc de Triomphe, the eZ Conference 2016 was about to kick off. Before I get into the conference itself, let me just take a moment to comment on the superb venue. A Guide to Understanding Customer Personas

Customers are people. Whether you’re in B2B or B2C sales it is people who make the decisions be it individuals or groups of people and they all share on thing in common: personas. What is a Customer Persona? A customer persona is a thorough understanding of who you are selling to so you can deliver the proper digital experience. It consists of a customer’s job title, department, product knowledge, education, experience, likes, dislikes, where they trust information from, who influences them and who they influence, their goals, challenges, responsibilities and skills. Understanding the mass of customer personas out there — and the ones you’d like to target — enables you to ensure your marketing stack is built to maximize your return on investment. So how exactly do you go about tracking down the customer personas you want to target? It’s quite easy actually.
